Meta Trader 4 Connection Bar on MT4 Status Bar
One fast way to see if your MT4 software is really connected to your broker's server is to look at the MetaTrader 4 status bars on the MT4 software screen - look for the MetaTrader 4 Connection Bar on the MT4 Status Bar.
In the example illustrated below, the MT4 Connection Bars in the MetaTrader 4 Status Bar are displayed:

The MT4 platform status bar tells you if you're connected to the trading servers: if you are connected, you can make trades in the online market using MetaTrader 4 charts. When there is a connection, MT4 charts can update: if MT4 Charts on your platform don't update, you should first check the connection using the MT4 Connection bars on MT4 Status Bar.
Green Bars - the connection bars on the MT4 Status Bar indicate an active connection: adjacent to the green bars, the kilobytes downloaded and uploaded will also be displayed as a numerical value.
Red Bars - In MT4, these bars in the Status Bar mean there's no connection, so trades can't be made to the online brokers' server.
Red bars may also show that your internet is not working, so if you are using a connection like dial up and red bars appear, then it might be your internet, and not necessarily the broker's computer. A question often asked by traders is, Why aren't my MT4 Charts Changing? If your MetaTrader 4 charts are not changing, then you might need to first check if the MT4 software is connected to your broker using the MT4 connection bars on the MetaTrader 4 status bar - MT4 Charts Not Updating.
To see the status bars on the MT4 platform, a trader must click the "Status Bar" button in the "View" menu, as shown below. Click to check: once checked, the MT4 status bar will appear in the bottom right corner of your MT4 Trading Platform.

Checking Internet Connectivity on the MetaTrader 4 (MT4) Platform Software
MT4 Platform has connection bars on the status bar. Green bars mean your internet connection is good, while red bars mean it's not working. The issue could be with your internet service provider or the broker's server. Most times, it's your internet connection that causes problems, since brokers usually have two or three servers running at the same time, so it's rare for all of them to be offline at once.
